EXPERIENCE

10/2001 - Present
Clanranald Trust for Scotland
Edinburgh, Scotland
Combat Team

Clanranald provides a truly unique experience for all those privileged enough to embark on a career with them. Not only does this group act as a non-profit educational charity, providing hands-on demonstrations of period weapons, tactics, politics, and culture, it also has more recently gained increased public stature by acting as historical consultants for many recent films such as GLADIATOR and BRAVEHEART.

My work with Clanranald began simply as an observer, which changed abruptly when I was asked to train with the group. Clanranald Trust was looking for ways to expand outside of Scotland itself and with an American member.

Clanranald training regime often proved to be brutal as any martial arts class I’ve seen. Drawing on the broad range of experience from all of it’s member’s, the group has developed it’s own unique fighting style. With members of Scottish military, parliamentary police, and various disciplines of Martial arts, what the Clanranald appreciated most about myself was the theatrical experience I brought with me. A broad background in dance and theater gave me a unique perspective on camerawork and staging most had little or no experience with.

I quickly rose from an observer to training, and then became an active Combat Team member. This meant I was able to work with some of the most experienced fighters on high profile jobs. On a given day I could be doing film work, educational visits for primary or secondary schools, or even corporate entertainment.

A positive experience, I continue my affiliation with Clanranald on a voluntary basis, helping them with business dealings in the US.

10/2001 - 5/2002
TGI Friday's
Edinburgh, Scotland
Waitstaff

Waiters were the all-purpose representatives in TGI Friday's in Scotland. We were expected and often did deal with all aspects of customer service.

One unique challenge of working in an American restaurant in Europe was dealing with the many distinct cultures of people who walked in the door. All expected to be served along their own cultural expectations, it was your duty to figure what this was as soon as possible!

As one might assume, language was usually a barrier. Walking up to a table, a waiter could have little idea what language a party spoke until you got to talking with a guest. Dealing with the almost inherent language barrier was one of the many daily challenges I dealt with successfully as a member of the waitstaff.

Frequently, after adjusting to the hectic pace of TGI's, I swiftly rose to top sales on most shifts which I worked. I was depended upon frequently during key revenue generating periods and thus given greater numbers of tables to serve than other waitstaff. Recognized by management, was recommended for promotion to a team designed for marketing and promotion of the store.

6/2001 - 9/2001
DTE Energy
Detroit, MI
Intern - Education and Community Services

Detroit Edison provided a fast-paced internship, with the dominant electricity provider for the state of Michigan. Detroit Edison has many public outreach programs, the Education and Community Services being one of the most unique among them.

My work with DTE Energy began far before my internship; in fact, my work playing the company mascot is what made me stand out in the first place. As Louie the lightning bug, I was expected to be a positive, self-reliant, and knowledgeable representative of DTE. It was because of this, my internship was offered exclusively to me.

I helped to coordinate and run the Summer Safety Town program in which my department was involved with over fifty local school systems to help educate children in safety around electricity. My duties included the donning the costume of "Louie the Lightning Bug" for many Safety Town appearances. Parades and other community events were some of the other events outside of Safety Town in which I was in costume as "Louie". When not in costume, I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Safety Town Program and along with other interns, ran a smooth program.

I have received many accolades from teachers, co-workers, and city officials in the course of my work with DTE. My work in costume as "Louie" has been considered by all to be exemplary; it has been pleasing to know I have brought a smile to so many.
